I will say I am shocked, but we deserve it after that lousy performance and frankly, with this team, I don't think we would have gone that far in Russia. I don't think they were as bad as the 98 squad, which came in dead last in France, but tonight they didn't look good at all in my opinion and outside of a couple of performances, looked like underachievers.
You could see it in the level of play in the Copa a few years ago against the South American teams, namely Argentina. Outside of Pulisic, the team played very poor and I may punch my TV if I see any of Bradley, Dempsey and Howard in a US shirt again. I would have rather seen Donovan play tonight, at least he would have gone out there with some passion and pride.
I agree with Twellman, I hope this wakes the US Soccer federation up, the model is destroyed beyond recognition and this never happens again. I mean we are in CONCACAF, are the largest economy by 2x and the third largest population in the world and we can't make it in by a simple draw against an island nation of $1.5 million and a GDP less than the state of Wyoming's. I can take some comfort in the fact that England failed to reach not one, but two, World Cups in the 70's (and a recent Euro) after winning the tournament in 66.
Okay, rant over.
