December 2002, a turning point for BYU football: Ken Schmidt steps down as
BYU's defensive coordinator. Two men emerge as favorites: Bronco and Whit. Crowton chooses his old friend Bronco. I don't know if BYU would have success with Whit as head coach, but Utah wouldn't have had as much success without him.
