Out of a bunker you're not trying to hit the ball first, just an area behind the ball so you have more leeway than an regular chip. Also it's hit with a little fuller swing. With the yips I'd rather be hitting a wedge from 135 than chipping from 20 because I've got a better chance of hitting it pure and getting closer.
