Look at the Olympics: the biggest event at the summer games (at least in terms of hype and TV ratings) is women's gymnastics, and in the winter it is women's figure skating. Female athletes in other sports can be famous, too, obviously, but being attractive sure helps their cause (see Alex Morgan, Maria Sharapova, Lindsey Vonn, etc.)
