Evaluating Bronco’s statements on BYU needing more support.
“What I can say now after playing these teams week in and week out is the level of coaching is at a higher level, the level of athletes are at a higher level, the way the game is played is at a higher level, and it happens every single week. It is a more significant challenge than what I think is currently being assessed at BYU and with what I think it might take to do that,” he said.

“But I want that for BYU, and I think they belong but then would have to make some obvious changes to the different support areas to ensure that that could happen, and they could have success at the level we would all want them to.”

Evidently Kinnehan interpreted this into meaning more $$ for coaches. Let’s examine that claim.

Bronco has essentially the same staff at Virginia that he had at BYU. They are getting paid more now, but has that made them better coaches? I wouldn’t think so. Is Bronco saying he needs to get rid of some of the old staff? I also doubt that.

My guess is that Virginia and other P-5s actually have more staff, not just higher paid staff. My guess is the have better (more) academic support, travel support, equipment support, and assistants for the Assistant coaches. BYU probably need some ecclesiastical assistants helping players avoid HC issues and cultural adjustments.

The notion that our coaches are substandard because BYU doesn’t pay more is not accurate IMO. The notion that it is tough to compete when you have one person doing a job that other programs have a coach and 3 assistants doing, seems more plausible.
