Jomo: "RE: 'team was/is very divided, culturally. The Polynesians act entitled"

I get the idea behind the post and his suggestion that CBers and others are dishing on the Polynesian players, staff and people without knowing who they really are. Meaning, I know what you are trying to say. And in its own right, it's still another full-on pile of self-righteous manure.

Nobody is suggesting that Polynesian people are not the salt of the Earth. Nobody is trying to unwrite any Matthew Cowley stories. That is NOT the point!

The point is that under these circumstances the Poly players have "ganged up" against the other players and have created a cultural divide.

The point is that some of the nearly all-Poly staff brought in by Kalani were working in jobs like baggage handling supervisor at Delta Airlines before they came to the program and are not qualified to be working in their jobs.

The point is that there is a lack of financial and operational control in the program at this time because the people Kalani brought in are not motivated to work that way.

The point is that faithful, humble and a mostly good guy like Reno Mahe, one of Kalani's close friends, is still as prone to making foolish, immature and lazy decisions as he was when he was young. He just doesn't "get it," and probably never will.

The point is that too many players are missing class and academic performance is falling. Like it or not, the Polynesian players are more likely to fall into that bucket than the non-Ploy players. It's just a fact so get over it.

The point is that the lack of accountability and discipline that is manifest by the trashed locker room is an indicator that the team is out of control.

The point is that players have become lazy and are not only skipping school classes but also not putting in the time to learn their position, learn the scheme, prepare for the next game and play assignment sound football.

The point is that culturally, they may (I will say "are") among the most humble and faithful people in and out of the Church. But that doesn't mean I want one to be my personal finance manager unless he or she is different than most of their former schoolmates.

The point is that there are skills and aptitudes that are characteristic of certain nationalities. What is it about German engineering, Italian design, American ingenuity, or the great faith and humility of that often defines the Polynesian people? Why are the Japanese so neat and tidy? Why are so many Chinese students good at math but struggle with abstract reasoning? DNA, culture, whatever. People from different places bring with them the skills and characteristics that are endemic in their culture.

My wife is 67% Asian and 33% Polynesian. Don’t tell me there are not cultural differences. There are. And you would not make your first recruiting trip to Tonga to find great accountants to staff your finance department. It’s not about “goodness,” it’s about the traits that define who we are as influenced by our background and culture. We all have them.

Back to THE POINT.  There is a lack of operational control and discipline within BYU Football and it is fully reflected in the win-loss record. It is NOT Ty Detmer, though I will also argue that Ty trying to teach a young QB to see the game flow the same way he does is like asking Albert Einstein to teach someone else how to be a genius. It doesn’t come easy.

My point is this: I love Kalani Sitake. I’ve met and spoken with him many times. But something has to give. He has to grow into his job and make some tough decisions or he will be gone in 12 months, if not sooner. I hope he does it because there’s a lot to love about him and much of what he is trying to do.
