blame it on the proliferation of youth soccer in our country...
...it's killing a lot of other sports (baseball, etc).

It used to be that the kids who had no hand-eye coordination, dexterity or athleticism to play sports like baseball, football, etc were the ones who went out for soccer since it was easier. Soccer enticed families with things like participation trophies for everyone, snacks after practices, the ability to hide kids on the field in a soccer game that were terrible athletes and spare the parents from the shame of having to watch their kid strike out looking with the bases loaded in front of all the other kid's parents who got hits with runners in scoring position.
