I've never heard them live so I have no idea, but their history of drug use and the main song writer leaving then returning, then leaving again, etc. hurt them more than the lead singers vocals. But I'm not too familiar with the specifics of their story. This was the conclusion I drew when I read about them after they produced Stadium Arcadium.
