I think the answer is a bit different
The problem is that he compares himself to his peer group. By talking about kids in the third world, the focus is to shift the point of comparison, rather than to focus on not being comparative.

My focus with my daughter is that we’re blessed materially and so we have a responsibility to help lift others.

But I do think visiting poverty stricken areas helps. Soup kitchens or something. I went to Tiajuana when I was in first grade and it had a profound effect on me.
