THe biggest mistake in his poor rotation is keeping Dastrup on the bench. The
guy has such a huge upside, and his eligibility is ticking away, while BYU wallows in mediocrity. PD's per minute stats are one of the best on the team. Rose is starting to look like NBA coaches who refused to play Jimmer despite what he could offer the team, and despite the numbers that suggest the same. Dastrup is the only player on the team who gets yanked after almost every perceived mistake. Love Nixon and Seljaas, but when either of them throw the ball away, or get beat badly for an "and-one," it seems to get viewed as a "good try, let's get 'em next time moment, but not so for Dastrup. Some people may claim otherwise, but the evidence is becoming almost overwhelming to the contrary that Rose just doesn't like Datrup's game. The reason escapes me.

Yet whenever Dastrup's in there, I watch specifically for his mistakes to see if I'm just not seeing it wrong, even though the stats suggest I'm right. What I see is a very big guy who is a load, a man among boys, engaged on defense, boxes out and helps really well, but occasionally lost due to lack of PT and chemistry with his teammates. And that drive he did tonight from the top of the key, although he ultimately missed the shot, he showed huge strides, and looked like he was going to posterize someone again. At very least, he should be put in to shoot the three enough times until it can be proven that his 3 point shooting % is not as good as some of the other launchers who are putting up a lot of bricks per game. In reality, Dastrup is our most potent 3 point shooter until proven otherwise, which can't be done on the flippin bench. And just what other team in the NCAA has a 6'10" guy who can posterize guys with his dunks is their best 3 pt shooter by %? It's a matchup nightmare if just given a chance.

C'mon Rose - I've ALWAYS been a supporter, but in addition to the persistent inexplicable losses to lame teams, and no conf tourney wins, the refusal to play PD is turning the tide for me. The guy deserves to play, and deserves at least as much of a leash as other players on the team are given. I fear that Rose's refusal to let Dastrup succeed may prompt him to leave for more empowering pastures after this year, which would be a terrible loss. Coach Rose's track record on that is not good, especially considering what the many former BYU players are doing to contribute to their teams around the NCAA. Those same players are contributing far more to their current teams than the players Rose replaced them with now sitting on BYU's bench. If that happens again with Dastrup, then I think Rose needs to be relieved of his talent-assessment and talent-development duties. Perhaps he'd make a good Dir of Basketball operations. He's a nice guy, but I don't see him being that nice guy to Dastrup.
