I'm guessing it's because the semester started just a few days before MLK day weekend. Same thing happened with Labor day. Didn't get it off, but we had just started the semester. I'd rather have a longer summer/christmas break by a day than have to come back and get a holiday right away before you've even started getting busy with anything.
