I broke down my credit card strategy for a friend recently and thought I would
share here. This may sound complicated on its face but it isn't at all.

Sapphire Reserve when it first came out had a 100,000 mile bonus. So I got one for my wife and I and cancelled hers before the second renewal date. The cards are still worth getting but they only have a 50k bonus now. Cancel your spouse's card before the renewal so you get $300 in travel credit, 50k miles and $100 for global entry at a cost of $450.

Here is what the card gives you in general. 3 points per dollar spent on travel and dining. It is $450/year cost but you get $300 in travel credit per calendar year so it's really only $150/year. You then also get free global entry for one person every 5 years. It gives you access to lounges in airports, free top end car rental insurance as well as extended warranties/purchase protections that are at the top of the market.

The last benefit is a little tricky to understand, but it allows me to use other chase cards to the fullest. Chase sapphire reserve allow points to be redeemed for 1.5x value in their portal. That means 3 points are really like 4.5 points when redeemed for travel in the portal. They are called chase ultimate rewards. I use different cards for different expenses. Here is what I use:

1. Travel and dining (3% in chase ultimate rewards) - chase sapphire reserve (or really expensive electronics)
2. Quarterly rotating categories (5% in chase ultimate rewards) - Chase Freedom
3. Gas (4% cash back) - Costco Citi card
4. Costco (3% cash back) - Costco Citi card
5. Amazon (5% cash back) - Amazon Chase Visa (just set it as default payment in Amazon)
6. All other purchases (1.5% in chase ultimate rewards) - Chase Freedom Unlimited

Since you can transfer all chase ultimate rewards earned on other cards to your Reserve account they all are redeemable at 1.5x. I basically get between 4-5% travel "cash" back on all my purchases when you combine it all together

Right now I'm doing the Chase Southwest cards again that with two of them and bonuses I will get the companion pass through this year and the rest of next. But I will stop using those cards after I get the bonus. You can do the Chase Southwest bonuses every 24 months.

As I said above I know it sounds complicated but it isn't. For most everything I use the freedom unlimited and most of the other purchases are online and saved in accounts for quick purchases.

Over the years I've easily gotten 15k+ in free travel.
