The engine now purrs like a kitten. Solution:
I had the valve rods switched. They are the same length but the ends are shaped slightly different so the intake valves were opening for too long and the exhaust valves too short. I swapped them and it is great.

Sounds like the engine is toast. Did you do a compression test on it?
