If BYU wants to play "chess" against the MWC, there is a way to do so. It would require the WCC and AAC strategizing together, and working in thier mutual intersts over the next 2-3 weeks.
The AAC and MWC are both in the process of negotiating a new TV deal. And so they are both adding schools in an effort to increase their appeal and their TV contract.
BYU is Indy in football and has zero desire to join the AAC. And the AAC only wants "football only" schools out west, because the travel is too hard for basketball and Olympics. When Boise and SDSU joined the AAC originally, they had to agree to park their sports in the Big West....
So, the WCC should be working with the AAC to steal two MWC schools right now. The AAC and WCC have a mutual interest, and are both under ESPN. Have the WCC tell the MWC that we are reserving 2 spots for the next 2 MWC schools that join the AAC in "football only". The AAC can choose 2 MWC schools to increase their football (TV contact), and kill off the MWC as a competitor. BYU stays Indy football and WCC basketball, and BYU fans are happy, after the WCC (and AAC) adds 2 MWC schools. I think Gonzaga also stays if we persuade Boise and SDSU to take this deal.
But, WCC leadership is weak... Not sure they are smart enough to pursue this idea.
