TNT could be wrong here
but he and a lot of other folks don't think BYU can't compete on the field, it's that the landscape of college football is changing so radically. The P5 is becoming like a semi-pro league and the rest of the non-P5 teams are headed to their own DII division. It's coming but BYU (or the fans) are powerless to change the inevitable.
Maybe BYU could have an epic program at the 2nd level. But a lot of fans admit they probably would lose interest at that point.
