The Jimmer/Kawhi years were awesome. But other's weren't so great.
Using realtimerpi.com look at the following of the top 5 RPI teams:
10-11 SDSU 3 / UNLV 25 / CSU 50 / NM 66 / (BYU 5) - Average 36
09-10 NM 10 / SDSU 18 / UNLV 48 / CSU 119 / (BYU 23) - Average 49
08-09 Utah 9 / SDSU 34 / NM 66 / UNLV 67 / (BYU 29) - Average 44
07-08 UNLV 20 / NM 63 / SDSU 95 / Utah 96 / (BYU 32) - Average 69
07-06 UNLV 10 / Air Force 29 / SDSU 65 / CSU 107 / (BYU 19) - Average 53
05-06 Air Force 49 / SDSU 56 / UNLV 93 / NM 118 / (BYU 68) - Average 79
Now compare that to WCC over past several years
17-18 GU 20 / smc 40 / USF 139 / USD 143 / (BYU 67) - Average 82
16-17 GU 8 / smc 17 / USF 94 / SC 125 / (BYU 65) - Average 62
15-16 smc 38 / GU 45 / Pep 129 / LMU 224 / (BYU 76) - Average 102
14-15 GU 8 / smc 68 / Pep 133 / Port 150 / (BYU 36) - Average 79
13-14 GU 19 / smc 56 / USF 68 / Pac 131 / (BYU 30) - Average 61
What the WCC is missing is one more team thats better than a 100 ranking. I think an RPI of top 5 teams in a conference of 50 is fine. Take the fourth best team in WCC and replace it with an 80 RPI team or something like that and you get much better respectable numbers. The overall conference isn't what matters. People just need a couple of name brands to look at. BYU hasn't been pulling its weight in wins either... if we have 2-3 more conference wins a year against the mid-to-bottom dwellers then our RPI is much better each year and we go to the tourney one to two more times (probably play in game, but say we win one of those to "get in"), everyone is happy then.
