to send the message of "it's ok to let your freak flag fly" no matter your race, gender, body habitus or sexual orientation and carneys were just the easiest medium to send that message through. A little more historical accuracy about PT Barnum, or a different medium for the message of "tolerance" would have made the film better. Either way, the music sold the movie.
