doctor is held accountable for malpractice. They can blatently lie about something, and they usually won't get caught. When they do, they just put out a retraction. Obviously, some mistakes will happen, or they themselves believed it was true. But they need to do research themselves, and if they lie about it they should fear for their jobs. Opinions are different, but when you are reporting "facts", whole different thing.
