I think it is pretty common for a team to outsmart themselves in the draft.
A good example of that is the Detroit Pistons this last year. I read a few articles about how much they liked Donovan Mitchell after his workout and even Donovan thought he would be drafted by the Pistons. But instead of taking the best player they ended up with a lesser player because he had better measurables or was a better fit. I think that was a big reason that Stan Van Gundy was fired. Its crazy to say but one of the best qualities in a GM is to just have the courage to take the best player available instead of doing what you think would look better on paper.
