I highly doubt he realized those things were happening in the moment.
That's more of a 20/20 hindsight comment, reflecting on what he needs to improve on. It's not like he was intentionally letting that stuff happen. But he's recognizing his mistake and improving on it (hopefully). nothing wrong with that.
