He probably freaked out the BYU admissions people when, among other things, he wrote about Buddha's teachings and how much he learned from them when we lived in China.
Anyway, after a mission and a couple of years at another great university, he re-applied and BYU admitted him this time. I told him not to mention Buddha in his essay this time (he served his mission in Cambodia), which probably helped. It's a good thing too, because he married a girl who was going to BYU; had he not gotten in, she would have had to transfer to his school.
