I'm a lurker and not a BYU fan though I am not a BYU hater either, I've warmed up to them over the past few years for various reasons including but not limited to me liking the current coach and players much more than past teams, as well as feeling like BYU's exclusion from expansion is a ridiculously unfair manifestation of the PC Police and their lack of tolerance, but those are discussions for another day.
As someone who is not vested in BYU sports like most on this board, the result of the QB race seems fairly obvious to me; and I'm surprised no one else has picked up on it.
Let me start by saying that in my professional life I'm an enterprise software sales rep. We have 12 folks on my team, and participate in a weekly forecast call. You can easily tell when reps feel like they are "on thin ice," because they go into "Cover Your Rear" mode, which includes things like sandbagging, overplaying small victories ("well, we didn't close the deal, but they really like us,"), blame shifting, etc.,
Kalani is smart enough to realize that he is only going to get one shot at being a head coach in college FB. This is it for him, and he is already feeling the hot seat.
Professionally, the best choice for Kalani is clear: to start Mangum for the first 5 games of the season, and then start Wilson in week 6.
The schedule is ridiculously front loaded, so any QB is going to have a tough time and most likely go 1-4 or 2-3. Things get easier with Utah st. and then Hawaii with an extra day to prep. It is the perfect time to bring in the new kid, and then have him rattle off a 5-2 record or better to end the season and generate some momentum and excitement. Going 6-6 or worse with a senior QB who graduates may not be enough for Kalani and gets no one excited including the fanbase and recruits. But going 6-6 with a talented new freshman QB who has 3 years ahead of him and "did some good things at the end of the season," is a completely different story. You can sell seats and recruit off of that.
My apologies if others have brought this up, but I think it is the most likely scenario that will play out.
