...on a potential 50 yd gain should have a consequence tied to it, like sitting and watching for a spell. If guys are going to miss assignments badly (like line up wrong and cause an illegal procedure penalty that wipes out a big gain in a tight game) there should be a consequence that gets their attention like sitting out a quarter at least.
I remember in high school playing varsity basketball, word got back to my coach that I had to serve a detention (picking up trash in the lunchroom) for being late to class too many times and on top of having to run extra wind sprints in practice I had to sit out the first half of the next game and he put it in the pregame newspaper story that I was sitting out the half for breaking a team rule (that was embarrassing to read in the newspaper). That was the last time I got in trouble for being late.
I don't know if coaches are really holding guys accountable for glaring mistakes or not, I hope so, if someone is dropping the ball, next man up.
