It seems odd to me as the answer seems pretty obvious and has been hit on by a number of people.
Tanner Mangum needs to play better. His receivers need to play better. There already has come a time this year (against Cal) where we needed to be able to pass to win the game. We couldn't do it and we lost.
Against Wisconsin we didn't need it for a number of reasons, being efficient in the red zone, efficient running the football and getting a huge chunk passing play on the double pass. Tanner played well enough to win and that is good. Against Cal and in games later this year he will need to play better if we want to continue to win. It is a fact. One that I believe both coaches and Tanner would agree with.
Does that mean I am calling for Tanner's head? No, I don't know what we have in Wilson and trust the coaches. I don't think Tanner has a long leash due to his play and I think coaches have already expressed that. His 12-22 for 89 yards against Wisconsin didn't take that off the table, but it also didn't require him to be benched.
So far this year Tanner has been a far below average FBS QB. That being said he has limited turnovers and managed the offense. We are 2-1 though in spite of our QB play and not because of it.
Let's enjoy the win and hope the passing game improves moving forward. We all want Tanner to succeed, but if he doesn't, we are willing to trust the coaches when they say they will move on from Tanner.
