I think we need more Hawaii, if only to deal with the front-load problem

BYU should look to play during Week 0 every year, whether using our flexibility when we play at Hawaii, or Hawaii's flexibility when we play them in Provo. Or, host another MWC team that plays at Hawaii and use their exemption flexibility to play in Week 0.

This gives us an early-season game to offset the front-loaded P5 schedules.

Had we moved the Hawaii game to Week 0 this year, we would have played 6 games by the end of General Conference weekend. Then, BYU can be more selective on our opponents in October and November and make good use of bye weeks (we would have 2 bye weeks each season).

With Hawaii in Week 0, we get a home game that prepares us for the tough September schedule with four P5 opponents. Take the Bye after Utah St. and move the Boise St. game to October 20 and the NMSU game to November 3. So, play at Boise St. after a bye week, followed by NIU, NMSU, at UMass. Then, have another Bye week before the game at Utah.

Also, consider to play games against other independents like UMass and Liberty over the first weekend in December. This gives us a third bye week. Perhaps move McNeese St. back so that we have a bye week in between Wisconsin and Washington.

  • Week 0 - Hawaii
  • Week 1 - at Arizona
  • Week 2 - Cal
  • Week 3 - at Wisconsin
  • Week 4 - BYE
  • Week 5 - at Washington
  • Week 6 - Utah St.
  • Week 7 - BYE
  • Week 8 - at Boise St.
  • Week 9 - NIU
  • Week 10 - McNeese St.
  • Week 11 - NMSU
  • Week 12 - BYE
  • Week 13 - at Utah
  • Week 14 - at UMass
