There are relatively few places where it's appropriate to have your dog. Other than walking your dog around the block, going to the dog park, or going to a pet store or vet, dogs should be left at home. Service dogs for the blind or disabled exempted.
They certainly shouldn't be brought to grocery stores, restaurants, on airplanes, or in hotels.
