I think to be semi-elite gamer today you have to be willing to spend
The majority of your day practicing and even then it’s not enough, you have to be born with the required qualities ideal to gaming.

Swimming similar except less on the practice and more on the born with qualities, but the genetic pool for swimmers is a lot smaller for sure than the pool for potential elite gamers but only because of the physical qualities needed to be semi-elite can’t be taught, you have to be born with those qualities.

My sons all played sports all their lives till
college. They also played games and reminded me I cost them a chance at elite gaming status because we never let them play on school nights, only weekends and only if they didn’t have any C’s or less. But I’ll trade that elite status for having them play outside with sports and now the marine Corp, and college. It sucks having my 21, 18, and 18 year old sons all out on their own, until I see so many of my friends kids return from missions and still living at home going on 30, and yes most are still gaming and haven’t moved out.

But all three of my sons are active gamers and likely will be for a while, so just like athletes of other sports I think you can find a good balance if as parents you have rules you are willing to hold to.
