...last 1/4 mile. As we were hiking out, there was a family hiking in and stretched out over probably 50 yards, with the dad towards the back helping a younger child.
The mom saw my Oval Y hat, and said quietly to me: "My husband WILL say something to you about your hat when he sees you." "Something good?" "No." She seemed a little embarrassed at that point.
Sure enough when I got to her husband, he looked at my hat, seemed to weigh his options, then just went for a nonchalant approach:
Him: "Are they going to win this weekend?"
Me: "Kind of hard to do on a bye week."
Him: "Oh, that's right. I was going to tease you a bit, but I won't now."
Obviously, this was not a big deal in the slightest. But, here's what I don't get about Ute fans: why do they have to say something? If I see somebody with Ute gear, I notice, but don't really care. I don't say anything. Obviously, from the wife's comments to me early, this guy makes it a point to say something EVERY time. That's just weird. The dude is probably a decent guy, obviously a family guy. I don't get it though.
I'm sure some Ute fans on here will claim I made this up. If I had made it up, you can bet it wouldn't have been this lame of an interaction.
