also well-written, with themes of sacrifice, finding new goals when life blocks the ones you thought you wanted, and dealing with tragedy. In all this, they keep that tangy humor, and are still filled with the lush descriptions of people, architecture, and nature that make the everyday seem touched with magic. We enjoyed them on a much deeper level than I expected.
