additional line on the donation slip that says “BYU athletics” or “BYU.” I realize we can donate now to BYU and I also know that Ute fans and some others would be furious but no one is compelled to give anyway. This would make supporting athletics very easy and doggone it, BYU is owned and operated by the Lord’s Church. Excellence in the program matters. The Utes and other public schools already receive State funds (our tax funds) while BYU does not. In addition, I know it is the policy of the Church to not support BYU athletics financially but why is this so? The athletic program complements the mission of the Church. Let’s change our archaic approach to funding this very visible activity. I hear some say that the Brethren will shut down BYU sports someday. Total nonsense. The program delivers far too much good and the investment is already substantial. It is here to stay.
