I have 2 kids at BYU...
Son started last winter when he got home off his mission... Daughter started in the fall.
If they are leaving after 2 semester's (fall/winter) I would recommend just renting something from BYU.
If you don't want to do that... I would recommend a MacBook (Pro or the new Air). They will outlast most other notebooks.
