I totally agree with you on this. It drives me nuts when I hear people say
"you don't do this professionally, they know more than you do." While I agree that they should know more about the game than I do, I also watch a fair amount of football, have played the game (not in college, but in HS), and understand the concepts of the game. A coach can say all day long that certain rushes or blitzes would not have worked, but if you are consistently throwing the same scheme at an offense all half long or all game long, the offense is going to adjust. The whole point of varying up the looks that you give the offense is to create confusion and force the offense into bad plays. Defenses that rush 3 consistently, unless they are absolute monsters and can blow up double teams, etc, are just going to give the QB that much more time to determine where to go with the ball.

Was Jake Browning and the USU QB that good, or did we give them a lot more time to find open receivers? Was Shelley in the 2nd half of the U game that much better of a QB than in the first half or were we giving him the same look over and over in the 2nd half? The reason that Brady, Rodgers, and Brees are so good is that they can sift through what is supposed to confuse them and still make the right reads. This is also the reason that some immensely talented QBs are unable to make it at the college level or NFL level because of their lack of ability to diagnose what the defense is trying to do. You take that away and a QB will look all world against a defense that is not providing different looks.
