You can’t definitively say either in AS case.
There are 5 types of open fractures (called Gustillo-Anderson Classification) and depending on which type he had his risk of amputation can be anywhere from almost zero to as high as 60-75% depending on the study you reference.

If he had injured an artery requiring repair then his risk is really up there.
