Definitely more cushion on natural grass. Yes, even with a soft sub-layer...
of material below artificial turf ("artificial turf" meaning "astroturf"). Like the one poster above said, natural grass has more 'give' (movement) for your feet when tackled low. Artificial turf was all the rage in the 80s and 90s; look around, not so much anymore.
