Succeeded with two programs that had little history and play in Podunk towns. How do you win in Lubbock and Pullman?
I recently saw an article that quotes the author of Moneyball calling him the Billy Beane of college football. Sounds pretty accurate, few coaches have done so much with so little. How many coaches can say they are the most successful coach in the history of two programs? Leach probably can, Mike Price made two Rose Bowls but, had some awful years in between so it's a toss up between those two.
Leach also has an incredible coaching tree. It seems like half of the hot coaches are former Leach players/assistants who run variations of his system (Lincoln Riley, Kingsbury, Josh Heupel, Neal Brown, Holgorsen, Harrell, Seth Littrel, Jake Spavital.
Then guys like Art Briles, Robert Anae, and Sonny Dykes who aren't super hot candidates for various reasons but have been successful at some of their stops.
Then he's had guys like Ruffin McNeil and Alex Grinch who earned their stripes as DCs under Leach and ironically will coach together now.
Surprised he hasn't been given a shot at a big time program. Would love to see what he could do with superior recruits and a solid DC. I recently saw an article from an Arizona writer arguing that the Cardinals should hire him. His Air Raid is taking over the NFL and has pretty well taken over CFB.
