My toddler woke up at 4 this morning and I took him back into his room. I noticed it was colder than normal so I kicked on the heat and the air flow was weak and the furnace shut off about 2 minutes later. Run downstairs and check the furnace and it's coding rapid red flashes. The chart says that its an issue with a faulty flame sensor so I quickly google it and pull up a video showing how to remove the sensor and sand/clean it, then reinstall. I do and the furnace is working as well as ever now.
I repaired my own furnace in the middle of the friggin night because I could quickly find someone online to show me how to do it. 20 years ago I'd have buried my kid in extra blankets and hoped that I could pay an HVAC guy $150-$200 to come out and repair it the next day. It's a great time to be alive and thanks to the interwebs, doing manly stuff has never been easier.
