I'm all for Edgar being in the HOF. But how does he get a pass on steroids?
From age 25-31 he had exactly 1 season of slugging above .500 (.544 age 29). His best OPS was also that year at .948.
From age 32-38 his WORST year of slugging was .543 (Age 38). His worst OPS during that stretch was .966 also in his 38th year.
Do players get better in their mid '30s? McGwire hit his 70 home runs at age 34. Bonds hit 73 at age 36. Edgar hit his career high home runs (37) at age 37, IOW more home runs than Sammy Sosa's last 2 years combined.
In an era where even Wally Joyner used steroids, it's hard to believe many players were passing on that, including Edgar.
