Because that means you HAVE those sports. You are losing money on all of these secondary and tertiary sports when you could be spending that same money elsewhere and benefiting from a greater ROI, e.g. taking the cross country annual travel expense and reallocating that to, say....football assistant coaches.
The only idiocy would be the inability to see that the Directors Cup is won predominantly on sports that are irrelevant and lose money for the athletic programs. It's a participation trophy for these afterthought sports/activities. And more importantly, it would be idiocy to not be able to understand how having more of these sports in your athletic program adversely affects the budgets for your revenue sports.
