To be fair, there are a bunch of roads where that's very common.
I don't know where OP lives, but Cache Valley certainly had its fair share of roads where high school kids could easily get a car up to 100. No turnoffs, nothing to hit, etc. The speed limit was 40 because it was a two-lane road between two nothing streets, but it was also the kind of place where you'd be as safe going 100 as you would be going that speed on a freeway.
