The last expansion was driven by getting into tv markets for cable/satellite distribution. And let's face it, Utah right now isn't too high on the coveted market list. Last time around it was on the best available list and so the Utes got in. With streaming killing cable and satellite, the circumstances will be very different in the future.
So if things get shaken up a bit in the next potential realignment, maybe local markets won't be such a big deal but national markets will be given a larger factor. To me this gives a sliver of hope to BYU as it has demonstrated an ability to attract a national viewer audience with its direct contract with ESPN.
