I’m one of those who didn’t have the grades for BYU out of high school. I worked my butt of at a JC with the goal of transfering up there.

Ultimately, I ended up at ASU. While BYU is still the number one school in the world for me and I hope my kids go there, I had a great experience at ASU:

Amazing institute
Highly regarded business school program as my degree (supply chain)
Walked on to the track team, something I wouldn’t have considered doing at BYU.

So yes, despite its reputation, and depending on your degree (engineering, math, business) i think ASU is a great school.

I wish i could have had a BYU experience, but am grateful for what I had in ASU
