I sold a bunch of RSUs and ESPP stock to pay for our house last year. I imported my E*TRADE 1099 to TurboTax and almost
Passed out.
I didn’t realize cost basis of non covered securities isn’t reported on your 1099. All of my proceeds were calculated as gains.
That’s a dirty trick by the IRS. I wonder how much double taxes the IRS collects from that.

Its your broker that reports it, not the IRS. The supplemental statement shows that basis

Of course. But my understanding is that my broker doesn’t report it due to IRS rules
