I was there when Junior Filiaga punched out the ref. Just after the play eneded, he sprinted about ten yards and appeared to absolutely pummel the ref with several wild haymaker punches. He was much bigger than the ref, and completely out of control. It was surreal. Nobody in the entire stadium could believe what we were seeing. My first thought was that Junior was going to cave the ref's head in and he was going to die right there on the field. Thankfully, the beating only lasted 15-20 seconds. As far as I could tell, the ref was pretty shaken up but not badly hurt, so I'm not sure if any of the punches really connected. But while it was happening it looked pretty bad.
At the time it was reported that the ref made a racial slur, but I found that hard to believe. I don't think we will ever know what really happened. Junior was suspended for the remainder of that season, but returned for his senior year. He was a solid player and to the best of my knowledge had no further issues.
My other memory of that game was that BYU scored a bunch of touchdowns early and built a big lead, but gave up a few scores, too. After Lavell took McMahon out early in the third quarter, the Aggies scored a couple of unanswered touchdowns. They were too far behind to threaten the outcome, but they definitely started to gain some momentum. However, when Lavell put McMahon back in, everyone in the stadium, including the Aggies, knew it was over.
