After driving home, here are a few thoughts I came up with.
1 - I was willing to give Emery the benefit of the doubt so far this year. He went through a very difficult time in his still young life and I was hoping he could come back and give BYU a spark this year. He hasn’t done that. He looks lost on defense and even worse on offense. The 3 he jacked up from 3-4 feet behind the line was insanely bad. He needs to call it a career as he is getting worse, instead of improving.
2 - While Dave Rose wasn’t the one throwing away passes, he is still the captain of the ship and needs to direct the team better. After several consecutive turnovers, they finally got smart and gave it to Childs on the post and he had an easy score. The uptop weave can be effective to establish spacing but Childs should be going lateral on the baseline to establish inside position and should not be anywhere near the 3 point line. When he sets the high pick, he should be rolling and not popping for 3 point chances.
3 - BYU desperately needed a 3rd scorer tonight. Seljaas had a couple early 3s but then disappeared. I would have liked to see the team run a few more sets for him to get him more involved and give Haws and Childs a brief rest on offense. This is coaching again.
This will be another year where we are left to say,”Next year we will be improved with Baxter improving and Haws being a senior.” I can’t wait to be disappointed again. This program needs new blood. Otherwise, get your 2019-2020 NIT tickets purchased now.
