supposedly grabbing on to a tree is a good thing in an avalanche. You can hang
on and let some snow continue down hill past you. Even if the snow rips you away it can delay you long enough to not get stuck in the heaviest amount of snow. I'd take my chances of collision vs quick burial. If i'm wearing a helmet and protect my head i'd rather have broken bones then get buried.
