It may have been a little easier back in '97. I was a transfer student from the military base schools (Troy State & University of Maryland). My grades were good, but nothing too special.

I was trying to go to PA school. I reenlisted to try to make it into the Air Force's program. That didn't happen either. It's probably good that I didn't go to USC, though. I grew up in a Notre Dame-loving family. It would have killed my dad if he had to tell people that his kid was going to SC. This is around the same time I started following BYU.
