You can do it or have your CPA do it as a favor. Most will do that.

TurboTax was free efile federal and state return for my daughter who only made a small amount like your son

Went with Turbotax because I'd used them before. It's done... He gets a $240 back.

Lots of sites will let you file federal for free if you're income is under $55k or not itemizing
