Right now, March Madness is going on and some of the games are being played at the Utah Jazz’s arena. Aside from Gonzaga, another big named school here is Kansas from The Big 12. Normally I bring my own lunch from home but with March Madness in town I decided to venture out and hit the food court at The City Creek mall. (Excellent mall, btw. Pretty spendy, but classy.)
I wore my BYU polo shirt and made it a point to approach fans of other schools who were there for March Madness. There are some “other schools” in town like New Mexico St. and such. But mostly I was interested in talking to Kansas fans. I like to get a “pulse” from the national perspective. There were some guys in line at Chick Fil A wearing Kansas Jayhawks gear. I joked “Hey! You guys stole Jake Heaps from us!” The first guy looked at me and said “I’m sorry, what was that?” Then his friend chimes in “Oh, I think he’s talking about Jake Heaps who played QB for us. He transferred from BYU, this guy is a BYU fan.” I chuckled. “Oh! Yeah, well we’re sort of a basketball school.” Then I told them I though Kirk Heinrich was awesome. I asked if they liked Salt Lake City and they said it was nice. I said I hoped that we could join the BIG 12 someday. They said “yeah, that would be awesome.” They were good guys. I’m sad BYU isn’t in March Madness but it’s cool when other big schools come to town.
