I remember seeing the Smith’s in AF where I grew up begin to wither and die after Walmart, Target, and Kmart were all built nearby (of course, Kmart is history).
There would be only a half dozen cars in the parking lot during normally busy business hours, the store would turn off half their lights to preserve power much of the time.
Now Smith’s is reachhing Costco levels of craziness sometimes, always packed, and it’s the nicest grocery store in the area. Really amazing transformation it’s bad over the last decade or so, at least from my perspective. Perhaps the chain as a whole wasn’t struggling as much as the stores were near me.
