First I will say that I am giving a semi uneducated opinion on Pope that may not be totally accurate or fair.
The good:
1. Recruiting - he would not have an issue recruiting at BYU. He would likely get the bulk of top LDS recruits. He'd be a better recruiter overall than Rose and would likely do a better job of keeping guys around.
2. He's likable - players love him, boosters love him, fans would like him. He's a very very likable guy.
3. I like his choices for assistant coaches at UVU — I would argue he has a better staff than Rose and is likely paying considerably less. He'd likely put together a solid staff at BYU. Cody Fueger belongs on the BYU coaching staff.
4. He has been able to improve his team every year he has been a coach. Positive momentum.
The bad:
1. X's and O's - he is not a great X's and O's coach.
2. Discipline - I am not sure he is going to bring enough discipline and exactness to the position. He isn't a Tom Izzo type that demands execution and obedience. That doesn't mean he can't be a good coach in other ways...but I don't think we would be a disciplined team/culture. Again, he would need great assistants that can bring the hammer and X's and O's.
3. I don't love the UVU sets or style of play. They don't shoot near enough 3's. I'd like to see him adopt more shooting into his program.
Overall he has an OK resume. He would need a few years to grow as a coach and adjust to BYU before his teams are better than Rose's. He would bring energy back to the program as well as a couple transfers.
If you don't give him a decent budget to bring in good assistants then we are setting him up to fail.
